As our conversation draws to a close, I ask Geordie whether his passion for telling authentic brand stories is from the same itch that his uncle tried to scratch by writing novels: is there something in the blood? ‘So, Simon is a thwarted novelist,’ he says, seemingly surprised – and intrigued – by the revelation of these literary ambitions in an uncle he calls his ‘father in London’. ‘Luckily, he’s never asked me to read anything,’ he says. ‘We’re always very honest with each other!’ I tell Geordie the story of his uncle’s rejection of the firm, and ask if he has a rebellion story of his own. Nothing comes to mind, or nothing that he wants to share. I don’t tell Geordie that his uncle would like him to become more of a rebel.
